GUS and Windows 4.0 GUS Daily Digest V11 #39 I need disk five of 2.06a software NOEMS SimCity 2000 and AIL Synergy GUS Multimedia Kit XWING Target jumping problem Standard Info: - Meta-info about the GUS can be found at the end of the Digest. - Before you ask a question, please READ THE FAQ. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 18 Mar 1994 10:12:12 SST From: FLAT^^TOP Subject: Gravis CDrom Daughtercard woes i need help... i bought the synergy multimedai upgrade kit, and asked for the CDrom (sony 31A compatible) daughtercard adapter. Well, it's this nice tiny little board that piggy backs on the GUS, now the board need it's own DMA, IRQ and port address, which i currently set to DM 3, IRQ 5, and port 340. My GUS is on 220 DMA 7 IRQ 11 SBOS IRQ 7 now the clincher is that the device drivers for the CDrom drive install and are executed properly, in fact teh CDrom light lights up when the driver initialises, and also lights up when MSCDEX runs. All the drivers and MSdex report that the CDrom drive was successfully initialised, but then i switch to drive G: (i have 4 HDD partitions and also 2 FDD), insert a CDrom disk, wait for the light to go off (after loading the CDrom), i do a dir command, and lo and behold i get CDR101: Drive is not ready (A)bort (R)etry (I)gnore ? gosh this happens countless times.. okie so the obvious thing is to check for IRQ clashes, i discover that my serial card's com2 is alos hogging IRQ 5, so i promptly remove the offending jumper, fine... i do the same thing.... SAME message !!!! next comes the port address, i try 360, 330, 320, ALL give the saem messge and problems, then the IRQ on the daughtercard is changed from 5 to 4, Comport freezes up, and the message CDR101: Unable to read drive (A)bort (R)etry (I)gnore ? comes out... change IRQ to 6, and my FDD controller fails change IRQ to 3, my com 1 freezes up and i get CDR101: Unable to read drive (A)bort (R)etry (I)gnore ? so now i try DMA, i leave the IRQ back to 5, and chose DMA1, i get CDR101: General Reading error (A)bort (R)etry (I)gnore ? so change to DMA 2, my HDD dun light up and boot. 8( so back to DMA 3, same problem again !!!!! IS THERE SOMETHING I AM DOING WRONG ? does the daughtercard require me to pull some jumpers or change some jumper positions on the GUS card itself ? There is not documentation on the other jumpers on the GUS ! teh CDrom uses the following lines to initialise [in CONFIG.SYS] LASTDRIVE = Z DEVICE = C:\CDROMDRV\LM328A.SYS /D:LASERWAV /S:2 /P:340 /V [in AUTOEXEC.BAT] C:\CDROMDRV\OPTI-CD\CDCACHE /H:LASERWAV /K /DC /X:512 C:\CDROMDRV\MSCDEX.EXE /D:$cdcache /M:8 /V /E i tried the following too. [in CONFIG.SYS] LASTDRIVE = Z DEVICE = C:\CDROMDRV\LM328A.SYS /D:LASERWAV /S:2 /P:340 /V [in AUTOEXEC.BAT] C:\CDROMDRV\MSCDEX.EXE /D:LASERWAV /M:15 /V /E i also vary the M value in the mscdex line and also change the mscdex to the latest dos 6.2 version. SAME PROBLEMS !!! is my CDrom driver faulty ? or am i doing something wrong ? does the daughtercard require some special jumpers or anything else ? PLEASE HELP ME ! ANY help or suggestions is appreciated, i am getting REALLY desperate, email me please ! thanks Jerry Koh /------------------------------------------------------------------------\ | <<<<<<>>>>>> Email: kohkhang@iscs.nus.sg | | MSwin, GUS & Scout+ Terbo User, Fanatic Gamer, DOOMer, BT, ST & SW fan | \------------------------------------------------------------------------/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Mar 1994 22:11:51 +1000 (EST) From: Murphy Simon Charles Subject: Gravis Ultrasound MAX??? Hi Can anyone give me any information on the Ultrasound MAX and a price if anyone has one. I have also heard a rumor that a ultrasound version is coming out with SoundBlaster Pro chips or something built, if anyone knows anything about this, the information will be appreciated. This file is available on the FTP sites (DOOMGUS.TXT), and will be updated as any new versions of DOOM are released. Sam ------------- To get DOOM to run properly with both music and digitized sound effects on the Gravis Ultrasound: 3 steps. SOUND *** NOTE: DOOM v1.2 may be able to use any valid GF1 IRQ including 11,12,15 *** (1) Set your ULTRASND environment variable, and use GF1 IRQ less than 8 example: SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,5 |_______ GF1 IRQ MUSIC (2) Doom requires that you have installed the General MIDI patch set from the 2.06 Install Disks that came with your Ultrasound (and are also available via FTP and BBS). DOOM will find your patches (using the ULTRADIR variable) in the MIDI subdirectory pointed to by ULTRADIR. example: SET ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND (DOOM will look in C:\ULTRASND\MIDI for the patches) *** NOTE: Step 3 is only required for DOOM v1.0 / Operating System 0.99 *** (3) You will also need to copy ULTRAMID.INI into your DOOM directory and rename it to DMXGUS.INI (or find and use the DMXGUS.INI file). ULTRAMID.INI is a part of the UltraMID/AIL package (also available via FTP and BBS). SETUP Run the SETUP program in the DOOM directory and select the Ultrasound for both sfx and music. Now run DOOM! *** NOTE: DOOM v1.2 is known to occasionally lockup with GUS support. *** *** If you experience frequent lockups and are using a high *** *** GF1 IRQ (11,12,15), try using a low IRQ (less than 8). *** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Mar 1994 14:09:19 -0800 (PST) From: Ernest Chow Subject: I need disk five of 2.06a software Fellow GUS users, Please help me out, my disk five of my GUS software 2.06a has a bad sector error. The -NOEMS switch is risky with any memory manager that has put the CPU in protected mode. -- Mike Batchelor | UseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinuxUseLinux mikebat@netcom.com | xuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesUxuniLesU Please help a beginner who has read the FAQ and DOS docs but is still confused. My G2000 486 machine runs EMM386 with the -noems switch. If I try to run megaem -noems I still get a message saying there is not enough EMS space. What is the reason for using EMM386 with the -noems switch? What will I be risking if I get rid of it? Will that be likely to solve my problem getting megaem to run? I would also like to know how to stop this problem. If it is a problem with a memory manager, I need a solution for QEMM though, not EMM386. Also, Does anybody know which patch is used on a 1 MB GUS for the SFX beep when changing to a new target? I found that when I use MegaEm, there is no [beep-beep] sound effect, I'd like to change the patch to something that is audible. ------------------------------ End of GUS Daily Digest V11 #42 *******************************
