Can anyone explain why the 32 bit version of AIL doesn't need a TSR or
any of that sort of program to make it work? It is as if with 32 bit
the GUS have native support. What's the technical/non-technical
reasons behind it?

Gus-heads:

I installed the new AIL drivers in Syndicate. I made the jazz guitar mod
to the .ini file. Sounds great!; however, there is one minor but exasperating
problem.

Once I'm done killing rival syndicate thugs and exit to DOS, I invariably get
a DoubleSpace protection fault #16. If you have ever seen this error you know
that it can be a religious experience, since it forces you to reboot and claims
that all of your data could be lost. After I changed my shorts the first time,
I checked out the FILE001.CHK only to find that it was unrecognizable crap.
I deleted it. No resulting system problems, but I don't have any of my system
files (or Syndicate files, or GUS files) compressed. Wierd, eh?

Oh, one other little thing:
If I shorten the intro and the Bullfrog title screen (by mouse-clicking),
the GUS seems to output all of it's patches in sequence, over and over. If I
don't shorten the Bullfrog title screen, this doesn't happen. Not a big
deal, but........

Comments? Suggestions? Cash contributions?

Er? Whats this Dust 3D demo? where can I get it (it's not on ftp.uwp.edu)?

Joe said it was part of a 20Mb demo and therefore won't be available for
down load. WHY NOT? lack of diskspace on the ftp sites? I doubt that.

O.k.. here's my problem. Although there is a reference in the README file,
SBOS continues to not work with NHL Hockey. Here's what it does. It works
fine up to the point where it has to load the playing portion of the game.
(ie. It will give me the lineups, then freeze.) Does anyone have a
clue as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Subject: Getting sound with Ultima VII Part 2

Okay, I've tried EVERYTHING to get sound in this game. I patched in the
AIL drivers but they don't work (says "can't initialize sound card") and
there's barely enough RAM to load Ultramid (U7P2 makes you disable all
memory managers, so no loadhi'ing). Mega-Em is of course braindead with
an EMM (why does it NEED an EMM, anyway?). So, is there some sort of
patch out there? Somebody help!

Also...does anyone know whether Ultima VIII will have native support?

Subject: GUS install ver3.1 under OS/2

Hello All,

I have been using my GUS for some time now under DOS. Recently I have
upgraded to OS/2. I am trying to use the version 3.1 installation but am
having a problem when selecting the Ultrasound IRQ in the SETGUS
program. My Ultrasound is at base address 210 as I have 3 com ports and
am running SIO for my comms driver and it doesn't like anything except
com ports at addresses 220 to 260. Every time I try and test the
Ultrasound IRQ the session crashes. Can anybody help me through this as
I know there are folks out there who have had success (in a limited way)
with their GUS'es under OS/2. BTW if I do a version 1.21 install
(Gravis *still* have not sent me my 2.06 disks) it installs perfectly
and I can play my MIDI files with no problem. Any ideas??

Mnay thanks for the time and trouble,

Grant

Subject: MODUS

Is there any way to contact the author of MODUS through the Net?

I have absolutely no idea why, but any MODs that I created with ModEdit
will not play properly. All the samples get distorted.

I tried loading the offending MODs into KingMod for DOS and then re-saving
them, hoping that might correct the problem, but no dice. Whatever's
unique about these particular MODs doesn't bother GUSMOD, WinMOD, or
MODPLAY (for Sound Blaster only) but it does bother MODUS for some reason.

It's as though the samples in these MODs are in a different format or
something, which I know to be false, since I ripped almost all of the
samples used in the MODs in question from other MODs, all of which play
just fine.

Any ideas on this one folks? How 'bout I upload one of the offending MODs
and see what sort of luck everyone has with it? I never suspected
anything might be funny about these MODs before, but something must be
non-standard.

(Oh, BTW, they all play just fine with the GUS hack for Wolf3D too, so
MODUS is definitely the odd man out for not being able to play them properly.)

1. Well I upgraded to a 386DX40 board and got one with the "nmi
procedure disabled". Could someone explain what this means?

Will this cause any other problems than not being able to run SBOS? I'm
not terribly hurt by that. Sounds like it is time to pick up a cheap SB
for real compatibility.

2. I am using Megaem to get SB DAC support in the meantime.
Are their any plans to work on or release a non-protected mode
   megaem?

Thanks in advance

I just upgraded to v3.1 of the GUS software. The software I had before
was rather old (HONKTONK.PAT instead of HONKY.PAT) and now it seems there
is a 'new' patch which I don't have (TREMSTR.PAT, Tremelo Strings).
Is there some way someone could uuencode this .PAT file and email it to
me? I'd appreciate it.

Subject: Question about gusmod

I'm running a 386-40 with the gus using 2.06 disks and have had a problem
develop. Everything in windows works fine, but the dos gusmod and mod demos
just lock up when I try to run them with the gus included mod files. Oddly,
dmp plays mods fine. Any ideas what's going on? When I run gusmod, the
file is loaded, then the screen locks up and I never hear anything. They
initially worked when I installed them under Dos 6.2 with Netroom memory
manager and I have tried re-installing the gus software still using the
same irq's and addresses. Oddly, everything else works fine, mididemo and
all gus windows programs. I've made no other changes to my system which has
16 megs of memory, and 1 meg on the gus. Gusmod and moddemo or whatever it's
called used to work fine with this setup. No other cards or system software
have been added. Let me know if anyone has any ideas. Thanks,

Rich

Subject: SBOS is for 256K, huh?

Very interesting. I still find it suprising that a more lifelike
representation of the SoundBlaster cannot be obtained, since SBOS
is hardly what I would term a "full emulation" (whereas MegaEm is
right on the money). Now that I hear SBOS was developed for 256K
boards... would a 1MB board sound better, and if so, can it be done?

All the people I know have already or would be willing to upgrade
the memory on their GUS to 1MB. Doesn't seem like an unreasonable
request...

By the way, how many programmers are there at Gravis, anyhow? The
references constantly made on this mailing service make it seem like
there's only one or two...

SBOS only is optimized for 256k of memory, right? Would there be any was
to produce a SBOS that took advantage of the full meg of RAM? Is this
possible for better FM emulation?

Has anyone tried the newest (or any for that matter) Windows drivers
with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Add-on for Windows (try saying that 5
times fast). This is billed as Microsoft's intermediate upgrade for
Windows while we wait until the end of the year for Win 4.0. It
includes a fair bit of 32 bit features that Microsoft claims speeds
Windows up by 50%. I have heard real world reports of about 30%.

SUBJECT: What motherboard or chipset works with GUS?

I have been a happy GUS owner since the day I bought it, JAN 93. I was using
a 386DX25 motherboard with CHIPS chip set and IIT 25Mhz math-co. GUS works
great on it. However, my mother board was spoiled when I was trying to take
out my math-co processor to play "DOOM" :-(. Now I've to get a new
motherboard. I'm thinking of get a 486dlc40 VLB or a 486slc40 VLB motherboard.
But, after calling few places, that I found in Computer Shopper, all of them
seems to use OPTI chipset :-(. Is the old OPTI problem fixed? What's is the
lastest update on that? It seems that I hardly them in the net nowadays. Is
there any motherboard that won't work with GUS? Will there be problem if I
would like to use midi in device on windows or dos?

I have try running GUS on my friend's UMC motherboard. At first the sbos did
not work. But thanks to gravis the SBOS v36 works and solve the NMI problem.
GUS work fine in windows, however, when I hooked up keyboard (synth) to the
midi in, it didn't work :-(.

How do I know the motherboard has working NMI? Anyone knows what motherboard
has working NMI and what does not have? Any suggestions where to get working
NMI motherboard?

Somebody please help, I can't live without GUS :-(

Thanks.
