Anybody not getting MIDI output in Windows after installing the new
drivers in gus0038.zip, just delete your old ultrasnd.ini from your
\ultrasnd directory, and use the restore file(s) option in setup.exe
to copy the new ultrasnd.ini over to your \ultrasnd directory. Then
just start up Windows. No need to edit the PatchDir fields as the
new Windows driver will do it for you.

The reason the new ultrasnd.ini wasn't copied over by the install
program in the first place is that it has a rather old date stamp
(circa Dec. 1993), and install.exe only copies over files that
are newer than the ones you already have in your \ultrasnd
directory and its subdirectories. Many people have edited
ultrasnd.ini or had it updated by some other program, and, as a
result, have a copy of ultrasnd.ini dated later than the one
on the new install disks.

Subject: EPAS, gus0037, gus0038 and all the rest of it....

OK, first to all the new comers of Internet, ftp, submit directory and
where to find newly submitted files......etc. [Here is one more thing to
put into the FAQ?] Whenever something new comes out, it gets submitted
to the submit directory of _some_ ftp site. In fact, people find things
very quickly hence normally within the first hour someone uploads it to
a ftp site, we'd see tons of messages on it already. So in our case,
since we're talking Ultrasound archive hence Ultrasound files, files are
submitted to .....
Ftp site "archive.epas.utoronto.ca", Directory "pub/pc/ultrasound/submit".

Now every couple of weeks, I go and validate these files, make sure they
should be on our archive, are virus free, actually works....etc.
Then I move them to the appropriate directories in our archive. Which
then in term gets mirrored all over the world to our other archive sites.
So in more cases than not, when something new and wonderful comes along
and everyone is talking about it, it is probably still sitting in the
above mention submission directory.

With that said.....

Now, our current problem. Something happened to epas and the submit dir
is empty. We, the GUS admins, have been trying to figure out what happened
all of yesterday but have been unable to contact Adam, the real sys
admin of epas. The way things are setup is that the submit directory
actually gets its own filesystem and the mounting point is the submit
dir. Last morning, this filesystem was unmounted for some reason. So we
can only assume that epas was having problems and Adam had to unmount it
for repair reasons and is up to his neck with trying to get things going
hence hasn't replied to us yet.

One thing for all to note though. You can gain access to our full
archive through our other GUS ftp sites. For example, archive.orst.edu
is our official North American full GUS archive site and it even has
a mirror of the submit directory (as does other of our ftp sites)
So you can still download yet-to-be-validated files from these
sites. The only problem, till we get epas going again, is no
submissions. But you can still download.

And for all those who complaints that epas is too slow and what not,
just remember that we have OTHER ftp sites. We have archives all over
the world. And they _do_ mirror epas's submit directory as well. This is
the beauty of our setup so that if something goes wrong, we can fall
back on all of our other sites around the world. So....
Here is the list of our sites with directory info....

Subject: Getting Mega-Em to work?!

Hi everyone,

(This is my first post, so if it something is wrong, no abuse...thnks)

Anyway, I got mega-em after reading about how people loved it, etc... and
nothing I do gets it to work with my GUS. In particular, I want to see if
it produces better sound than SBOS in World Circuit, but when its loaded
and seemingly running like it should, there is no sound effects or
anything at all. What should I do? I am fairly new to the world of GUS
and sound cards in general so any advice is appreciated.

Also, does having more memory on the GUS improve the sound effects for
games, or does it primarily help with music files and composition, etc.??
I am wondering if I should bother with the upgrade. Again, with World
Circuit using SBOS the engine sounds a bit musical...its not *that* bad,
but its a bit of a let down, but if more memory will help, then I will try
it out.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi all - I tried running Wing Commander II the other night and found that
after the first couple of words on speech at the beginning, the speech
stopped. The music continued, and the storyline went on to the next
shot, but then stoppped there. Anyone seen this before? The last time I
ran it I was using a 386DX40 motherboard, and now I'm using a 486DX40
overclocked to 50MHz. Several other things have changed in the meantime,
but even with an absolutely basic CONFIG and AUTOEXEC, it still hangs.

Any tips? I'd be surprised to learn that the new motherboard was causing
such a specific problem. But then, maybe not.

Subject: GUS demo of cavemen.

The other day I was at Fry's Electronics and I saw a Gravis
Ultrasound setup with boxes of GUSes around a computer with a GUS in
the system. On the computer there was this demo of several cavemen,
bashing soundcards to pieces. The soundcards had the names of SB,
PAS, and Adlib. After cracking the soundcards in half, a big earth
quake occured and the earth split. Out of the big crack in the
ground, an Ultrasound emerged. The cavemen were shocked. There were
also some other parts to this presentation. There was the vector
world flyby part from Second Reality. Parts from the 3D sounds demo
by DUST. There was also this other demo by Epical promoting the GUS.
So my question is, does anyone know where this demo is. I'd like to
see it again.

After upgrading via gus0038, my problems with the SB/midi conflict seemed to
disappear when testing the installation with setgus. However, now Recording
Session, Power Chords, etc generate no sound. In fact, the windows media player
cannot be made to produce sound either. Before the upgrade, I could get sound
but nothing through the Ultra Sound midi adapter: now I have lost the sound
also. However, now as well as before, the sound associated with games (xwing,
wing commander, etc) is fine. Any suggestions, anyone? Bernie Mueller

I just installed the new drivers in GUS0038.ZIP, and from
the DOS side, they look real good and some of the midi files
seem to sound better as well. I also installed them into
Windows, but don't get any sound from MIDI files. I fire up
MidiSoft, and it plays 'em but there is no sound. I might not
have MidiSoft configured for MM Windows now that I think about
it. But if you have any further suggestions, please leave me a

I just got gus0038.zip, and im debating not to install it due to
the listed probs people r having with playmidi. I read something about
new patches in the new full install disks (something like 192 and it used
to be 189 or something), would this cause any other probs? Where can we
order the new install disks? when? how much? I'd rather install all the
new files than chance patch # problems.

Actually, that brings up another point. GUSMOD doesn't work at all. It
hasn't worked since I changed my GUS over to 240,5,5,11,5. Not that
it's a major loss or anything.

As far as MODUS, I determined what the problem is. I'm not exactly sure
WHY this is the case, but any MODs that were created/edited with MODEDIT
2.00 (an old and really crappy MOD editor that I used to use back when I
actually cared about MODs) will drag and otherwise get distorted to the
point of sounding terrible.

It just so happened that the only MODs I tried were ones I had composed
myself, and they were all screwed up. When I played some other MODs
they were fine.

So, that brings me to my next question: What's a good MOD
editor/tracker type thing that works with the GUS so I can load and
re-save these things to get rid of whatever flakey thing is in there?

This happens to me, too. I do not have to USE it, just load, then unload,
bang - keyboard dead, time to reset. It requires no other software
whatsoever (except DOS, of course) to reproduce this. Otherwise, it seems
to work just fine. As long as I do not unload it, I can continue to use
